30 Dates with my Liver #20: Green Smoothies Revisited

11 Aug

Early on, my liver and I pledged to make a green smoothie every morning. This daily date has been so delicious that we’ve actually kept it up almost every single day!

Here are a few of the reasons the daily green smoothie rocks:

1) They taste great.
There’s something so satisfying about the crunch of pulverized celery as a base to a delish fruity, creamy (if you use a banana! or rice milk! or an avocado!) concoction. Greens and fruits were just meant to be together, in a smoothie, in your mouth.

2) Chew your smoothie to tell the digestive system it’s time to get to work and your liver swings into action, soaking in all of the nutrients you have conveniently made available by blending them. The sugar from the fruits is balanced by the heartiness of the greens, so it doesn’t jolt you like just fruit juice alone can.

3) Green smoothie in the morning=good food all day!
Not only does a green smoothie in the a.m. give you a lovely hum of long-lasting clean energy well into the morning, your fridge is always well stocked with fresh fruit and veggies! When it comes time to cook dinner, there’s something easily on hand that will do you and your body good.

4) They are an outlet for creativity
The possibilities are limitless. Do lemon and avocado and strawberries taste good together? Only one way to find out! Odds are if you put a bunch of your favorites in altogether and push start things will turn out great, but it’s always fun to try something new.

5) Easy to add in supplements and have them taste great!
It can be icky drinking fiber with nothing but water. Protein shake mixes can be hit or miss. But combine them with all the fresh goodness of a green smoothie and bam! Instant yum.

Here’s a great blog by another green-smoothie enthusiast who shares some great links and recipes.

And ohmagawd! International Green Smoothie day is coming up! Maybe experiment with a few green recipes yourself before the big day? Have fun!
